This is a large contemporary eight sided granite vase that I created out of a stone that was leftover from another project. This past Christmas for our in family homemade gift exchange I made a granite rolling pin out of a piece of granite that was leftover from a previous project. Leftovers form leftovers. I love it when that happens. For this 16” tall vase I started with a roughly 4”x 4” x 16” square with a 3” core hole 13”+ deep. “Life After Death”. An exaggerated depiction of mycelium recovery after a forest fire. If you visited my studio anytime last year you may have seen this oddly coloured stone partially carved and laying in the gravel. I started to carve this in February 2023 from a stone I found in a roadside ditch not far from here many years ago but after just one day I put it aside until this past fall. Once I discovered the shape I had a clear vision of how I wanted to present it and I just recently completed it. Three bowls I finally finished last week. The first two pics a conglomerate from a local gravel pit/quarry(Lanark, ON)…marble cobbles in a soft matrix that was likely mud at first. Second two pics a granite pegmatite from a beach on the west side of Cape Breton, NS. Last two pics a granite conglomerate from a small beach at Capstick, Cape Breton Island. This wall hanging “Sunny Fish” wouldn’t survive in the wild without an anal fin and pectoral fins but I made the best of a piece of nepheline syenite that has been in my scrap pile for over ten years. The cancrinite veins and bits of sodalite make it come alive. It’s 10 1/2” long and hangs on a single screw by a keyhole slot carved in the back(flat side). I have a bunch of projects on the go as well as two granite monuments(that will have to wait till spring) and a face sculpture I started on the other day. This slab and muller is my last completed project for this year. A small commission for Toronto artist @jordinmimran who wanted a stone muller to grind and make his own paint. Carved out of Stanstead grey granite from Rock of Ages Canada the slab is 20”x20”x 1 1/2” and the muller is 4 3/4”x 4”.
